What is call tracking, and how does it work?
· CallRadar Team
If your business gets leads by phone, you have a measurement gap. Your analytics can tell you which ads produce clicks and which pages produce form submissions, but the moment someone picks up the phone, the trail goes cold. The call happened; where it came from is a guess.
Call tracking closes that gap. Here is the whole mechanism in three steps.
Tracking numbers
A call tracking tool gives you a pool of phone numbers that all forward to your real business line. Callers notice nothing. But because each number is only shown to a particular audience, the number itself tells you where the caller came from.
The simplest version is one number per offline source: one for your Google Business Profile, one for the truck, one for print. When a call comes in on the truck number, you know the truck produced it.
Dynamic number insertion
On your website, the same idea goes further. A small script swaps the phone number on the page for each visitor, based on how that visitor arrived. Someone from a Google Ads click sees one number; someone from organic search sees another.
When the phone rings, the tool already knows the campaign, the keyword, and the pages that visitor viewed. The call is matched to its source before you answer.
The report
Every call lands in one report next to your form submissions, each lead tagged with its source. Over a month, the picture is hard to argue with: this campaign produced 40 calls, that one produced 3.
That is the entire product category. Everything else - recording, transcripts, CRM sync - is built on top of that one trick: the number tells you where the call came from.
